Full & Partial Rewiring

Rewiring work completed by Hector Electrical

Wiring does not typically fail all at once; deterioration tends to present gradually, through a socket that is warm to the touch, a circuit that trips with increasing frequency, lighting that flickers under load, or a fuseboard that is evidently decades old. Any one of these signs in isolation may not be significant. Occurring together, or on a property that has not been rewired since construction, they generally indicate that the wiring has reached the end of its serviceable life and that a rewire, full or partial, requires proper assessment rather than ongoing patch repairs.

A full rewire replaces all cabling, sockets, switches, light fittings and the fuseboard, bringing the property up to current standards in a single project. This is the appropriate course of action for older properties that have never been rewired, or where issues are present across multiple circuits rather than isolated to one area. A partial rewire is more targeted, addressing a single room, an extension, a kitchen refit, or a specific problematic circuit, without disturbing sound wiring elsewhere in the property. The appropriate approach depends entirely on the condition of the existing installation, and an honest assessment is provided rather than a recommendation for the larger scope of work.

A rewire is not without disruption, but the manner in which it is managed makes a material difference. Work proceeds methodically, room by room where the property allows, with flooring and furniture protected and the site kept properly tidy between visits. On occupied properties, what to expect is communicated in advance on a day-by-day basis. Every rewire is tested thoroughly on completion, leaving the property wired to a proper standard rather than patched.

This service covers Essex and East/North London, from period properties that have never been rewired to newer extensions requiring work brought in line with the rest of the property. Every rewire is priced following an assessment of the property, as scope varies considerably between a single room and a full house. Enquiries and quotations are provided without obligation.

Frequently Asked Questions, Rewiring

Signs include frequent tripping, warm or discoloured sockets and switches, an old fuseboard with rewireable fuses, round-pin sockets or fabric-covered cables, and rooms with too few sockets for modern use. If you're unsure, an inspection and honest advice can be arranged.

A full rewire replaces all the wiring, sockets, switches and the fuseboard throughout a property. A partial rewire targets specific circuits or areas, such as a single room, an extension, or a kitchen, without disturbing wiring elsewhere in the house.

There's no getting around some disruption with a full rewire, but the work is planned to minimise it, working room by room where possible, protecting flooring and furniture, and keeping the site tidy throughout rather than leaving mess between visits.

For a partial rewire or single room, usually yes. For a full rewire of an occupied property, it's manageable but worth discussing upfront so you know what to expect room by room and day by day.

A partial rewire might take a day or two. A full rewire of an average house typically takes one to two weeks depending on size and access. A realistic timeframe is given once the property has been seen.
